Who would be your backup 1st baseman?

Giambi is going to need a lot of time at DH because of his shaky health and even shakier defense. In fact, I would imagine (hope) that Giambi DHs at least during Wang's starts. But, the question is, who do you put at first base when Giambi is DH'ing?

A) Andy Phillips - 29 years old. Has been respectable in the minors.

B) Miguel Cairo - 32 years old. -6 VORP last year, with a 40% collapse rate according to Pecota.


Extra Credit: Apply the cliche that "if your DH is batting 9th, then you have the wrong guy dh'ing" theorm to 1st basemen in 200 words or less.


If Torre knows Cairo sucks enough to bat him 9th, why can't he take the next logical step and realize he shouldn't be playing at all? A 200 million payroll should not have their DH or 1st baseman batting 9th.
